Bandwidth requirement
It is often asked, what is the minimum bandwidth requested regarding the SMS Gateway for IP SMS connections? This question is hard to answer, because the bandwidth requirement depends on many circumstances. In this text you can find information about what effects the requirement and an example calculation to give you an idea.
The bandwidth requirement depends on the following:
-SMS message size
-SMS protocol used (SMPP, UCP, HTTP, etc.)
-Is VPN connection used or not
-Is there any other communication on the cable you use
Let's suppose we send 120-160 character long SMS messages over the SMPP protocol. An average SMS takes about 2 Kbytes. Meaning that on a 128 Kbps ISDN line you can transfer 8 messages per second. (128 Kbps/8 bit = 16 Kbyte/sec)
